When Jackie Robinson sparkled 75 years ago Sun. in his minor league debut, his post-HR handshake with teammate George Shuba appeared in papers all over & it's soon to be a Youngstown, OH statue. AP photographer John Lent captured it, as did Frank Jurkoski/INP, Chick Solomon/freelance, Irv Wagen (his shot was from the 3B side for a now-defunct local paper) & others. Robinson biographer Chris Lamb says, “Having a photo freeze-dried the moment, if we don't have that it slips away into history.”

Remembering 3 Rachel Robinson quotes from our 3/16/96 interview - #3: "His level of optimism diminished over time and he saw equality was something you had to fight for, not birthright, but as a young person, he thought hard work would get you there. He soon found out that was not the case, he became more and more outspoken about obstacles to our becoming full citizens, (and) ran into barriers to that progress that made him less and less optimistic and more cynical."

Remembering 3 Rachel Robinson quotes from our 3/16/96 interview - #2: "He got death threats, crank letters, warning letters. Initially, I would get them and throw them away, you can't take in all that is frightening. When it got specific, I turned them in to the team. It should have affected us more, but there were immediate threats more potent than hastily scrawled letters."

On Jackie Robinson Day, remembering 3 quotes from his widow, Rachel, in our 3/16/96 interview - #1: "I would describe Jack as a race man, he was very occupied with the fate and plight of our race. It was very important to contribute to the progress — a preoccupation sometimes more important than what was happening to himself — always striving for excellence, but a part of that striving was how it would be perceived."
