Dodgers' Turner hit by pitch, leaves game

Los Angeles third baseman Justin Turner left Thursday's game at Philadelphia after being hit by a pitch in the right hand in the first inning.

As if losing 20 times in a 25-game span weren't bad enough, the Dodgers are now suffering some dings to their lineup mainstays. Corey Seager, who is already dealing with a sore right elbow, has fouled balls off his calf and ankle this week and sat out today's series finale in Philadelphia. And Justin Turner had to leave today's game after being struck in the hand by a Mark Leiter Jr. pitch in the first inning. This is not the way manager Dave Roberts envisioned gearing up for the playoffs.

Do the Dodgers have a bullpen problem heading into the postseason? Through July, the pen had a 2.83 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. Since then, it owns a 4.90 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. Kenley Jansen and Brandon Morrow seem like the only reliable relievers of late, but haven't pitched much as the Dodgers have lost 20 of their past 25 games.

The Dodgers had a chance to clinch the NL West on Wednesday, but instead suffered a third straight loss to the lowly Phillies, who will go for the series sweep on Thursday. The Dodgers are 5-20 over their past 25 games and their magic number remains at two. The Red Sox did clinch at least a wild-card spot with their win and the Angels' loss. Other magic numbers: Red Sox: 8 (to win AL East) Cubs: 8 (to win NL Central) Yankees: 3 (to clinch wild card) Diamondbacks: 4 (to clinch wild card)

Let's talk magic numbers. The Astros, Indians and Nationals have already clinched division titles, and the Dodgers can join them tonight. Their number is two, so they need a win over the Phillies -- the Phillies won the first two games of the series -- and a Diamondbacks loss to the Padres to pop the champagne. Will they stay up in Philly to possibly celebrate? Other magic numbers: Red Sox: 9 Cubs: 9

Pedro Baez continues to pitch himself out of a key role in the Dodgers bullpen - - and maybe off the postseason roster entirely. Entering with a 2-1 lead in the seventh, he gave up four runs and picked up the loss. In August and September he's allowed 16 runs and 31 baserunners in 15 innings (and five HRs). It's time for Dave Roberts to stop relying on Baez to get key outs.
