Yankees CF Hicks (back) to miss opening series

Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks will miss the first series of the regular season because of a lower back injury he has been dealing with since March 1.

Coley Harvey ESPN Staff Writer

Aaron Hicks told ESPN today he'll end up missing Opening Day due to the lower-back injury he's had this spring. Although he'll miss the opening series, he expects to be back in the lineup in time for the Yankees' second series vs. Detroit. Hicks would've been on track to play Opening Day, but he just had a second cortisone shot this morning. Discovered Saturday he'd need it.

Regarding the four-outfielder alignment Aaron Judge faced against Toronto on Saturday, the Yankees slugger said: "I didn't even know what was going on until after. I just saw two guys in the gap. Just looking at the pitcher, I could just see two guys in my peripheral standing in the gaps. So I guess the centerfielder must be in the middle and those guys are playing tight? I don't know. It was just a little different to see ... (Homering) that's one way to beat it."

Coley Harvey ESPN Staff Writer

Twice Saturday, Yankees first baseman Greg Bird came up with the entire left side of the Blue Jays' infield completely vacant. Toronto also used a four-outfielder alignment against him, as it did versus Aaron Judge, too. Judge homered over that defense, and Bird walked both times he saw it.

Yankees top prospect and centerfielder Estevan Florial is undergoing X-Rays after Saturday's game on his right wrist after he collided hard with the wall going after a deep fly ball late in the game. Manager Aaron Boone believes it may be something minor, but Yanks are taking a precautionary look anyway.
