A girl soon to turn 2 was struck in the head 9/20/17 by a foul liner at Yankee Stadium, had skull fractures & brain bleeds and was in the ICU with a feeding tube & seizure monitors. Exactly a year later, her father Geoff Jacobson told ESPN: "Progress has continued. While some things will be monitored for years to come, my daughter gets to go about her days like your average toddler. It's been a long and stressful year, but my wife and I got to hug our daughter tight this morning, so it's hard to feel anything less than blessed." Unlike the minors & colleges, all 30 MLB parks now have safety netting to at least the far ends of both dugouts. "I'm not quite sure how the events of a year ago didn't inspire ballparks at all levels to extend netting and evaluate safety," Jacobson said. "It was our hope that my daughter would be the last of these injuries, but sadly, stadiums across America continue to roll the dice."

Before greeting grandparents, parents, siblings and friends in the tunnel after Wednesday's game, Justus Sheffield admitted he was still trying to calm his nerves. He's still excited about his MLB debut. He even heard the Bleacher Creatures chant his name in the middle of his ninth inning. "That's how you know I wasn't really locked in," he joked. At points, he was so nervous he thought his hand was shaking and he was balking. As for the long Mookie Betts foul ball, he's known Betts (who gave him a head nod before the AB) a while. He definitely didn't want to give up a homer to him in his debut.

Luke Voit on this series with Boston: "We don't want them to clinch here. They're our rival, and we're going to try to do everything we can. We've been cold as a team, and we haven't been our New York Yankees ... (With improving health) it's scary how good this team's going to be, and we're looking to do some damage when we get to the playoffs." Added Luis Severino: "It doesn't matter what the score says. They're going to win 100-something games, we're going to be behind them. We're going to grind until the end. Every game from here out, we're going to fight until the end."

How important is it for the Yankees that Aroldis Chapman is coming off the DL? Consider this. He has 31 saves and two blown saves this season. The rest of the bullpen has blown 13 saves. New York's bullpen also had a 3.98 ERA after he went on the DL about a month ago. Prior to that, that ERA was 3.12.
