Encarnacion, Santana on move in 3-team trade

The Indians have reacquired slugger Carlos Santana in a three-team deal with the Mariners and Rays that sends Edwin Encarnacion to Seattle and Yandy Diaz to Tampa Bay.

As they dismantle the stage in the media workroom, the biggest trade of these winter meetings has become official with Carlos Santana headed back to the Indians, Edwin Encarnacion going to the Mariners and Yandy Diaz to the Rays headlining the three-team deal.

I'm scratching my head over the Rays' portion of this three-team deal. Yandy Diaz makes far more contact than Jake Bauers, and I suppose he's a Rays launch-angle project for 2019? I'd have rather kept Bauers, who looks a lot closer to developing into a 25-homer player.

Most of the free-agent market has been slow to develop this winter, but starting pitcher is a clear exception with Lance Lynn heading to the Rangers hours after Charlie Morton joined the Rays.

Source: RHP Morton closing in on deal with Rays

Right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton is close to finalizing a deal to join the Tampa Bay Rays, a source confirmed to ESPN's Buster Olney. Yahoo Sports reported that the deal will be for two years and is worth $30 million.

When he was Tampa Bay's bench coach, Charlie Montoyo organized and called the Rays' various defensive shifts. He's bringing some of them — and the "opener" — to Toronto. "I've seen it work, so we're going to use all this stuff." We'll see how much. Oh, and as a shift proponent, he's all about keeping the defensive rules the way they are. "They're big-league players. They should make an adjustment; and I think they will."

Rays reopen site search; no opening until 2024

Rays owner Stuart Sternberg says the team's planned ballpark for Tampa's Ybor City can't be finalized by this month's deadline and he will reopen the site search, delaying any opening until at least 2024.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Rays manager Kevin Cash confirms the team will stick with the "opener" strategy in 2019 and says the internal discussions right now are whether they'll do it two times through the rotation or three times.

The top offseason priority for all 30 MLB teams

Your favorite team probably isn't going to get Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. But another move -- maybe for a top pitcher -- could make all the difference this winter.
