Zion undergoes knee surgery, out 6-8 weeks

Zion Williamson had surgery Monday to treat a torn meniscus in his right knee and is expected to miss six to eight weeks, the New Orleans Pelicans announced.

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry didn't have any update on Zion Williamson's status on Sunday afternoon, saying "when we have something that needs to be said, we'll do that. Right now, it just is what it is." ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski said on Friday Williamson will miss a "period of weeks" with right knee soreness. Pels guard Lonzo Ball said the team will hold down the fort without Williamson but added "he's not out the whole season, he'll miss a couple games but he'll be back strong."

Sources: Zion (knee) expected to miss weeks

A severe injury has been ruled out for Zion Williamson's right knee, but he is expected to miss period of weeks to start regular season, league sources tell ESPN. Pels are clearly treating injury with an abundance of caution but there's no shortage of confidence on full recovery.
