CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- One of the annual high school hoops pilgrimages that occurs in September is Rick Barrett's Gym Rats Midnight Madness, held at Cherry Hill East High School. Barrett has always done a great job drawing a fair share of elite high school talent from around the country to participate in a day of SAT prep (The Princeton Review) and a night of basketball competition. Past participants have included such NBA standouts as Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, Josh Smith, Stephon Marbury, Antoine Walker, Marvin Williams, T.J. Ford, Donnell Harvey, Joe Johnson and DeShawn Stevenson, among others.
Celebrating its 17th year, the event does not possess the same luster it once had, with major college coaches in attendance and rosters chock full of high-major prospects. But it does still manage to draw some of the nation's best players, and this year, top-rated 2009 prospect Derrick Favors (Atlanta) was the big headliner.
