In an unprecedented move, the NCAA purchased the preseason and postseason NITs as part of a settlement of the NIT's antitrust litigation. Clearly, the NCAA saw significant risk going forward in the courtroom, where its past record has not been particularly good.
No matter how the NCAA came to the decision to buy the NIT, it is now up to the NCAA to administer those tournaments properly and in the best interests of the game.
I have been consistent in my opinion that the postseason NIT should go away. The postseason NIT used to be the daddy of postseason tournaments, with teams turning down NCAA Tournament bids to play in the NIT. Those days are long over.
