"He plays like a Philly guard should play."

If you've heard someone say that and you follow basketball, you know exactly what it means, so in celebrating the 50th year of the Big 5, we have to talk about what guard play has meant to Philadelphia's college basketball scene.

For all intents and purposes, the modern era of college basketball in the city started in 1955, the first year of the Big 5. Formed as a round-robin series of games among five schools located within a 17-mile radius, the Big 5 quickly became part of the city's fabric and the Palestra caught on as one of the great basketball environments in all of college basketball.
