The Panthers are lurking in the Big South's tall grass this year. Let Winthrop carry the burden of expectation and Buzz Peterson's fast-climbing Coastal Carolina team be the darlings in preseason publications.

Meanwhile coach Bart Lundy's fourth High Point team is an exquisite combination of talent, experience and depth. The only question mark: Do the Panthers have the beef inside to bang in a bigger Big South?

Truth be told, their perimeter play could be so good that the size question might become moot. HPU returns one of the league's best and most versatile players in 6-5 junior Arizona "AZ" Reid. Reid (18.3 ppg, 8.9 rpg) was fourth in the Big South in scoring, second in rebounding and ranked among league leaders in three other categories. Not bad for a big guard-small forward-power forward hybrid.

"He'll start at power forward," Lundy said. "He's comfortable there, though he's a little under-sized. He's tough to guard and he's strong, so he has no problem defensively down there. He has really worked to expand his game and that's part of the reason he was so much better last year. He can shoot the three. He can face up a lot more than he could his freshman year and he continues to be our hardest worker."
