The fortunes of the College of Charleston, ever a Southern Conference contender, ride with a terrific backcourt and a host of new faces.

It's a testament to the school's tradition that last year's eminently acceptable 18-10 record constituted the fewest wins in a season in 14 years. While it remains among the league's elite -- "Charleston is still Charleston," coaches will say when sizing up the league predictions -- the program is trying to get back to its normal level of success that includes 20-plus wins, a spot in the league championship game and an RPI under 100. The Cougars simply have been that good.

The season itself was pretty solid for Charleston; the painful sting came in the league tournament with a one-and-done -- a down-to-the-wire defeat to Appalachian State that nixed any chances of another 20-win season.
