The South Carolina State basketball program is in a bit of a drought. Yes sir, hard times have fallen on the Bulldogs, who haven't won the MEAC title in three years.

South Carolina State has been one of the top programs in the MEAC for the last 20 years. When former coach Cy Alexander came to Orangeburg in the summer of 1986, he took the Bulldogs places they could have only dreamed of previously. They played in five NCAA Tournaments, finished either first or second during the regular season 10 straight years and became a force in the MEAC. The Bulldogs didn't win the championship every year but they would have a lot to say who would.

Alexander left after the 2003 season when he led S.C. State to its last MEAC championship. It was a memorable one as the Bulldogs rallied from 20 points down to beat Hampton and advance to the NCAA Tournament one more time.
