Giant(s) headache for Irish fans?

December, 26, 2006
I wonder if many Notre Dame fans were cringing as they watched the New Orleans Saints thump the NY Giants on Sunday. The Giants, as you probably know, have proven to be a complete mess this season and it seems more and more likely that Tom Coughlin is not the answer there. As expected, the name Giants fans and a lot of the New York media are calling for: one-time Giants assistant Charlie Weis.

Today, the lobbying for Weis kicked into high gear from a couple of prominent NFL writers in the NY market. Gary Myers of the NY Daily News says Weis is exactly what the Giants need right now:

"The new coach must get Eli Manning to play more like Phil Simms than Joe Pisarcik. The obvious choice is Charlie Weis, who has said he's a Notre Dame lifer. But he would have walked from Foxboro to East Rutherford for the Giants job three years ago, one year before he went to South Bend. He finished second to Coughlin for the Giants job and ahead of Romeo Crennel and Lovie Smith. He's a Jersey guy. The Giants were always his dream job. Weis has Tom Brady and Brady Quinn on his resume -- as well as Parcells and Bill Belichick -- and would be best-equipped to get Manning straightened out. The Giants have to at least investigate what it would take to get Weis out of his Notre Dame deal. It might require the revenue from a couple of luxury suites at their new $1.2 billion stadium."
