Coaches in waiting if Dorrell falls

November, 27, 2007

The buzz here in Los Angeles is that if Karl Dorrell's team doesn't upset arch-rival USC on Saturday, the Bruins head coach will be fired shortly thereafter. UCLA had 20 starters back from a team that knocked off the Trojans last season, coming into the year with lofty expectations. But then they were hammered at Utah, hit hard by injuries and were relegated to using a walk-on QB when they hosted Notre Dame and then promptly lost to the then-winless Irish.

Dorrell's record of 35-26 has only riled up a growing pool of Dorrell bashers, who have been peppering local and national media with their Dump Dorrell campaign for over a year. Barring a shocking upset Saturday, I suspect the Dump Dorrell crowd will get their wish. That would trigger an interesting search with former Colorado and Washington coach Rick Neuheisel's name expected to be in the mix. What's not a rumor is that two former BYU guys each would love to get a crack at the job. Sources close to Texas Tech coach Mike Leach say he'd be thrilled to come to Westwood and take over the Bruin program. Leach loves Southern California and went to law school here at Pepperdine.
