Time to make some picks

September, 23, 2009

I had a shaky week going 9-11 against the line, keeping me three games under .500 for the early season. The good: picking Tennessee to give Florida fits. The bad: picking Fresno to keep it close against Boise. The ugly: picking Tulsa to hang with Oklahoma. Here are this week's guesses:

Mississippi Rebels at South Carolina Gamecocks (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN)

Can the Rebels handle the hype? Last season Steve Spurrier's offense carved up the defense of his former assistant Tyrone Nix. Expect the Rebels to get more pressure and eventually force Carolina QB Stephen Garcia into a few key mistakes while Jevan Snead shines in the Thursday night spotlight. Carolina is just 1-31 all-time against top-five teams -- and in the Spurrier era, the Gamecocks are just 1-7 against top-10 opponents. The pick is Ole Miss 23, South Carolina 20.

To check out the rest of the Bruce's picks -- and yes, he is "tempted to pick against" a current top-3 team -- you must be an ESPN Insider. Insider
