Horns-Cowboys, Trojans-Ducks and more picks

October, 28, 2009

I had a decent week last week. I went 13-11 against the line, putting me 10 over for the season versus the number. The good was picking Iowa to beat Michigan State. The bad was picking South Carolina to pound Vandy. And the ugly was picking Army to hang around with Rutgers. Here are this week's guesses:

North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Tech Hokies (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN)

The Tar Heels are 0-5 against Tech since the Hokies joined the ACC, and UNC hasn't beaten a ranked team on the road since 2001. Don't look for it to happen on Thursday night at Lane Stadium either. In two road games this season, UNC QB T.J. Yates has thrown two touchdowns and four interceptions. The Tar Heels also rank 83rd in the country in sacks allowed. The pick is Virginia Tech 31, UNC 13.

West Virginia Mountaineers at South Florida Bulls (Friday, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2)

Jim Leavitt's team has done pretty well against the Mountaineers' attack, holding it to 13, 13 and 19 points in the past three years. But I'm not sure the Bulls will be able to do it this time, not at least for the whole game. They've been very shaky (75 points allowed the past two games), and Noel Devine seems to thrive on the prime-time stage. The pick is West Virginia 31, South Florida 23.

Indiana Hoosiers at Iowa Hawkeyes (Saturday, noon ET, ESPN)

The Hoosiers had beaten Iowa twice in a row before getting drilled 45-9 last year. Coming off a heartbreaking road loss after blowing a big lead to Northwestern, Indiana probably won't be able to sustain the level of intensity for four quarters that it will take to knock off the Hawkeyes. The pick is Iowa 27, Indiana 7.
