It's time for the Noel Devine show

June, 22, 2010

We're continuing Freak Week with a look at the maturation of West Virginia Mountaineers -- and YouTube -- phenom Noel Devine. I read a nice story about how Devine and some of his pals from his high school days down in Florida put on "the 239 Future All-Stars Camp." About 120 children between ages 6 and 18 showed up for instructions and autographs, wrote David Dorsey:

"It just comes down to having a passion for it," said Devine, the all-time leading rusher in Lee County high school history. "I know it means a lot to the kids. They motivate me to want it even more."

By "it," Devine means having a standout senior season before hearing his name called in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Devine's backstory is pretty well known by football fans. Last season, he ran for 1,465 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. According to Dorsey's story, Devine flew into Fort Myers on Friday evening, for the main purpose of seeing his two children -- aged 4 and 2 -- on Father's Day.

I spoke to WVU coach Bill Stewart on Tuesday morning about his star's growth, both on and off the field.
