2010 disappointments: ACC, ND, Pitt

September, 29, 2010

Since we're a month into the 2010 season, it's a good spot to check in on who or what have been the biggest disappointments of the season thus far. Hence, the topic of this week's Top 10 list.

1. The ACC:
Expectations were higher than ever since this conference was reshaped almost a decade ago. There were experienced QBs, fast defenses, touted past recruiting classes and, once again, underwhelming performances. The first three weeks were disastrous. You probably know the breakdown, but the Virginia Tech Hokies hang with the Boise State Broncos, then lose late -- then go out and lose to James Madison. The Florida State Seminoles got mauled in Norman. The Miami (FL) Hurricanes lost to the Buckeyes and turned it over four times in the process. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets go out and lose to the Kansas Jayhawks -- just a week after Kansas lost to an FCS team. Since then, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have been thrashed by the Stanford Cardinal, the Clemson Tigers blew a lead versus the Auburn Tigers and then Duke lost by two TDs at home to Army. The conference had a 1-9 record against nonconference BCS opponents in the first three weeks of the season. Maybe worst of all has been the off-field debacle ongoing with the North Carolina Tar Heels that derailed a promising season before it began. The lone big bright spot: Russell Wilson and the North Carolina State Wolfpack are 4-0 and looking good.
