Tuesday's late afternoon links

First and foremost I want to congratulate former Bartram Trail (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Current Clemson quarterback Kyle Parker on being a first-round selection in the MLB draft. Florida has long had a history of players who have excelled at both baseball and football enough to have the opportunity to choose their path.

Whether or not Parker chooses football or baseball is up to him but after watching him win the starting quarterback position over South Carolina prep legend Willy Korn, Parker has proven himself to be a competitor of the highest order.

• In sadder news, many of the state's high school writers are mourning the passing of Florida Today prep reporter Mike Cherry. The 54-year-old reporter assisted my with the publication of a magazine in 2007 and was a kind-hearted gentlemen that had the respect of his peers. He is survived by his wife Carrie and their 3-year-old daughter Julia Grace.
