A look at the Norland Vikings

August, 17, 2011
With kickoff less than two weeks away in Florida it's time to profile some of the state's top programs and players. After a breakout season in 2010, Norland has established itself as one of the major programs in Miami-Dade county.

School: Norland Vikings
City: Miami
Coach: Daryle Heidleburg
2010 record: 13-2 (Lost in Class 3A state championship)

Top prospect: It's really hard to describe what kind of impact Randy "Duke" Johnson can have on a game until you see him play. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Miami commit plays all over -- running back, wide receiver, defensive back and even long snapper. He was saddled with injuries for much of his junior season and could only play about 40 percent of the team's plays in the postseason but he still carried the Vikings to the state championship and finished with over 200 all-purpose yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the 44-33 loss to Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.).

Other committed prospects: Keith Brown, LB (Miami); Ereck Flowers, OL (Miami)

Notes: Wide receiver Brandon Snell, a Louisville commit, transferred to Carol City (Miami, Fla.) after the spring. It will be interesting to follow the recruiting saga of defensive lineman Teko Powell this season. The 6-2, 275-pounder committed to Louisville in May but was never happy with his decision and he re-opened the process in July. It's going to be a wait-and-see game for Powell as he will need a strong senior season to re-establish himself as a major prospect. Wide receiver Dareen Owi (6-2, 190) has offers from several mid-major schools and defensive back Freddie Davey (5-10, 180 pounds) has an offer from FCS program NC Central and is hoping to turn the heads of some FBS programs this season.
