Witnessing the future

December, 20, 2010

Welcome back to the Three Downs & Punt Christmas Special, where we'll never pull the football away from Charlie Brown at the last second. Instead, we'll just pull him and let Nebraska's Alex Henery do the kicking.

To the plays!

First Down: Meet Mr. Clowney, aka The Future

With apologies to the six teams competing in bowl games and those competing in the NCAA's lower division playoffs, I was witness to the finest defensive unit assembled on any football field in America over the weekend. The place was Wofford University's Gibbs Field in Spartanburg, S.C., home of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, the 74th all-star game played between the two bordering states.

Late in the first half, with North Carolina leading 10-0, its neighbor to the south finally sent out the defensive lineup that the crowd had been waiting for, not to mention the college scouts.
