Does the BCS create more questions than it answers?

I've been pondering this question since Saturday: Should there be an automatic berth for a BCS team that doesn't win a conference championship if it ends up ranked No. 3 or No. 4? Notre Dame ended up being ranked No. 6 and earned an automatic spot. Ohio State grabbed a bid with the No. 4 ranking. Sorry, Oregon, it's been great season, but not quite good enough for a BCS berth with your No. 5 ranking.

I suppose the ultimate goal is to avoid politics knocking out a highly ranked team. Fair enough. I mean, if a team is ranked in the top four it should be in a BCS game.

I know it's safe to say that the TV rights holders (ABC through this year's games) want the highest-ranked teams playing. TV ratings are the ultimate goal of the broadcaster.
