What went wrong for Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee? Is Auburn the team to beat in the SEC next season? Will Houston Nutt (Arkansas) and Rich Brooks (Kentucky) be on the hot seat? Our SEC notebook addresses those questions and much more.
With Tyrone Prothro, Alabama looked like it might be a national championship contender. Without him, the Crimson Tide looked pretty average.
The Tide's defense was a force all season and finished among the nation's leaders. But when Prothro broke his leg against Florida on Oct. 1, Alabama was never the same.
To Mike Shula's credit, the Tide (9-2, 6-2) still managed to win nine in a row, but senior quarterback Brodie Croyle took a beating in season-ending losses to LSU and Auburn. After Prothro went down, Alabama failed to score more than 18 points against an SEC foe. The offensive line also couldn't protect Croyle, who was sacked 26 times in his last five SEC games.
