Arkansas State's bid to defend its 2005 Sun Belt championship started well enough -- a win over Army at home on opening day ended with the jubilant crowd tearing down the goal posts at Indian Stadium, and a few weeks later, a Hail Mary pass with no time left on the clock earned the Indians a win at Memphis.
Before they knew it, they were off to a 5-2 start and appeared to be headed for another bowl appearance and a possible conference title.
But that's where the feel-good story took a dramatic turn. Arkansas State went 1-4 the rest of the way. They were outscored 122-23 in their four losses, three of them to conference foes Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and Louisiana-Lafayette.
Now for the real head scratcher. The Indians' lone victory during those miserable final five games was a road win at Troy, the eventual Sun Belt champion.
There were several factors in Arkansas State's 2006 nose dive.
