COACH AND PROGRAM
A fast-food mentality permeates the business of Division I-A football: "Yes, I'd like a No. 6 (wins) every year with a bowl of BCS and a large graduation rate. And I don't want to hear about your lack of scholarships, so make it snappy."
That's why, shy of two full seasons at the helm of the Wildcats, head coach Rich Brooks needed a dreaded "vote of confidence" from president Lee Todd and athletics director Mitch Barnhart last October to avoid being the latest limited-time offer at KFC -- Kentucky's Fired Coaches.
Never mind that Brooks inherited the probationary shackles, including scholarship limitations that are just now being lifted, inflicted on the program after Hal Mumme's shakedown ended in 2001.
