Is Penn State for real?

It will be evident whether Penn State's supposed offensive resurgence is real or imagined after its Big Ten opener at Northwestern. The Wildcats offered almost no resistance at Arizona State, allowing 773 total yards. If quarterback Michael Robinson can't victimize a Northwestern secondary burned for 483 yards in Tempe, Ariz., Penn State can give up hopes of claiming a top-tier bowl berth.

• Freshmen Derrick Williams was supposed to be the receiver that revitalized the Lions' passing game, but it was redshirt freshman Deon Butler who looked the best in a 40-3 win over Central Michigan. A converted defensive back, Butler caught five passes for 108 yards and two scores.

• Workers began removing the old turf from Beaver Stadium's playing field on Monday and were replacing it with $100,000 of new sod this week in hopes that upcoming home games against Minnesota and Ohio State won't result in large chunks of grass being displaced.
