Lions add kicker protection

September, 15, 2005
The Lions signed long-time Arena League kicker Remy Hamilton to the practice squad, leaving the option for him to be added the active roster Saturday afternoon. Jason Hanson has a slight tear in a hamstring. Hamilton beat out three other kickers in workouts this week. The Lions probably have no choice but to have Hamilton on the active roster. They are already gambling without having an experienced backup quarterback while waiting for Jeff Garcia to heal from a broken leg. The Lions can't gamble about having a kicker who probably isn't going to be ready in a key game against the Bears.

Falcons cornered: The Falcons are thin at the third cornerback spot with Kevin Mathis out for the season after blowing out a knee Wednesday in practice. They placed him on injured reserve. Instead of going for a more experienced third or fourth cornerback, the Falcons signed Christian Morton, who was on the Redskins' practice squad but had been in the Falcons' training camp.

Expect Roethlisberger to play: Steeler players were supposedly laughing at Ben Roethlisberger missing practice Wednesday with a bruised knee because they didn't think it was serious. Roethlisberger then missed practice Thursday, so the Steelers had no choice but to downgrade him from questionable to probable. Still, it would be a major upset if Roethlisberger doesn't play against the Texans on Sunday. It's a big game.

No LB shuffle for Vikings: The reason the Vikings will use Rod Davis at middle linebacker if Sam Cowart doesn't play is because they don't want to change two linebacker positions. E.J. Henderson, last year's starting middle linebacker, is starting as the weakside outside linebacker. The Vikings like his speed on that side and don't want to make it tough for him to re-learn the middle linebacker spot.
