Survey says ...

A headhunting firm has completed a survey of what the league's 32 owners want in their new commissioner. Once that report has been distributed to the owners, the commissioner search committee can begin interviewing candidates. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue wants to be out of office by July, but he's hoping a decision on his replacement can be made before the start of the regular season.

Williams waiting on NFL: Ricky Williams' bid to get to Canada is being held up by the NFL. Within the past week, Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban gave Williams his blessing to try to work out a deal with the Toronto Argonauts for the 2006 season as long as the Dolphins get back his rights for the 2007 season. Williams can't play in the NFL in 2006 because he again violated the league's substance abuse policy and is suspended for the season.

The CFL demands one-year contracts with options, but the league wants Williams, so it has offered six or seven adjustments in the contract's language to make sure the Dolphins get Williams back in January. The NFL hasn't approved any of those proposals, so the Argos' two-week training camp has started without Williams.
