Building Ferguson's contract

July, 27, 2006
It figures that an offensive lineman whose nickname is "Brick" would start his NFL career with a contract that has some building blocks.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson's deal, which could go as long as six years, starts as a five-year contract worth $27.5 million. After an extra day of tweaking, the guarantee of the five-year deal increased to slightly under $18 million. The building block involves the sixth year, which is under the control of the New York Jets. If the Jets decide to keep Ferguson for a sixth year, he could get as much as another $10 million, and that number would be guaranteed in 2011.

The guarantee in the Ferguson deal is roughly 25 percent more than the one given to Cedric Benson, the Chicago Bears running back taken with the fifth pick in 2005. Benson's true guarantees were slightly more than $13 million.
