There is only one Emmitt Smith. Fans in Dallas should not expect another player quite like him anytime soon. But that doesn't mean the Cowboys' rich tradition of running backs can't continue with Julius Jones.
Last season, Jones was limited to just eight games after breaking his left shoulder blade in the Cowboys' 19-12 win against Cleveland in Week 2. In the seven games Jones played after returning, (Weeks 11-17), he rushed for 803 yards on 192 carries and seven TDs. Project those numbers over a 16-game season and you have 1,835 yards on 439 carries.
Jones' highlight reel got a real boost the moment he returned from his injury. Who can forget the three straight games of 30-plus carries, culminating in his Monday Night Football debut at Seattle? Against the Seahawks, Jones ran for 198 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Dallas won 43-39.
Going into that game Jones told me, "I have something to prove every time I go out there, and I just keep that chip on my shoulder to motivate me."
