Handicapping the AFC East takeover: Who will be first to catch the Pats?

Can the Patriots be dethroned in the AFC East? (1:53)

Dan Graziano, Jeff Saturday and Tim Hasselbeck reveal their biggest AFC East storylines heading into the season. (1:53)

Dec. 28, 2008.

That was the date in which the Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets 24-17 to clinch the AFC East Division title. It's notable because it marks the most recent date in which a team not named the New England Patriots clinched an AFC East title.

New England has won the division 15 of the past 16 seasons, including the past 10. As if their divisional dominance wasn't enough, the Patriots have played in eight (eight!) consecutive AFC Championship Games.

The landscape of the NFL changes often and quickly, but there's little reason to believe the Patriots won't make it 11 in a row this season. In a nutshell, Bill Belichick is still the coach, Tom Brady will be under center and their all-important offensive line and secondary remain in excellent shape.

Though the Patriots are clear division favorites (11.2 projected wins), their competition is better than it was in 2018 (admittedly a low bar).

Here is the state of the rest of the AFC East, as well as each team's outlook for 2019 and beyond.
