Falcons praise OL for playing with broken foot

Falcons rookie right guard Chris Lindstrom earned praise from his teammates after playing nine snaps after breaking his right foot in Sunday's season-opening loss.

Julio Jones enters Sunday night's home opener vs. Eagles 102 receiving yards away from surpassing Roddy White as the franchise's all-time leading receiver. Of Jones' 10,762 career yards, 5,054 have come at home, including 20, 100–plus-yard home games — 141 vs. the Eagles in 2015. For his career vs. the Eagles (including playoffs), Jones has 45 catches for 698 yards and three touchdowns with five, 100-yard games in six outings.

Falcons went with 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) on 51 of 67 plays vs. Vikings, according to Next Gen Stats. For those wondering about the two tight end look, Falcons went 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) and 22 personnel (2 RB, 2 TE) on 10 plays combined. Falling behind 21-0 meant more passing and more three-wide to try and stage comeback. OC Dirk Koetter admitted maybe he should have went one more play in 11 personnel on the goal line instead of the big package with 6 OL, 2 RB, 2 TE. Two plays in that package led to a Matt Ryan INT in the end zone and a one-yard loss by Ito Smith.

Source confirms to ESPN Chris Lindstrom indeed broke his foot. The Falcons first rounder will be in a boot for 8 weeks with the hope of coming back for the second half of the season, I'm told.

Falcons RG Lindstrom has broken foot, put on IR

Falcons first-round draft pick Chris Lindstrom suffered a broken foot in Sunday's season-opening loss to the Vikings and was placed on injured reserve.

Julio Jones on the Falcons' ugly start to the season in a 28-12 road loss to the Vikings: “Just not the start we're looking for. It's the first game. We don't need to freak out. But, at the end of the day, we control this. We're shooting ourselves in the foot; getting behind the sticks early on. We couldn't stay out there on the field to give the defense some rest. We've just got to do better. And we will be better. That's that. It's nothing else. At the end of the day, it was on us.''

Vikings trample Falcons 28-12 behind fierce defense, Cook

Anthony Harris highlighted a thorough thrashing by Minnesota's defense with two interceptions of Matt Ryan and a fumble recovery, Dalvin Cook carried a revived running attack, and the Vikings started the season with a 28-12 victory over the Atlanta...

Falcons fall to Vikings, 28-12, in season opener. Matt Ryan 33 of 46 for 304 yards with 2TD, 2 INTs, and passer rating of 85.8. He was sacked four times and hit seven times. Julio Jones had 6 catches for 31 yards on 11 targets with a TD. Austin Hooper leads Falcons with 9 catches for 77 yards. Devonta Freeman with eight carries for just 19 yards as Falcons rushed 17 times for 73 yards. Injury to rookie right guard Chris Lindstrom (foot) one of the storylines. Defense surrendered 172 rushing yards and 3 rushing TDs.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Falcons rookie first-rounder Chris Lindstrom out the game right now with a foot injury. That's bad news for the Falcons, who dealt with all kind of injuries last season. Lindstrom is listed as questionable to return. Wes Schweitzer stepped in a right guard. That would be a big loss to lose Lindstrom for any significant amount of time.

Falcons WR Russell Gage took a helmet collision before the half and is now in the concussion protocol. Gage came into season expected to be a key contributor and the guy playing the “X'' behind Julio Jones. Gage also has a major role on special teams. If Gage misses a game, the Falcons could activate rookie Olamide Zaccheaus if they want five WRs vs. Eagles in Week 2.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Down 21-0 at halftime, Falcons have major adjustments to make on both sides. The offense needs to pick up the tempo and have Matt Ryan take more downfield shots, but Ryan needs better protection. He's been throwing on the run or under duress too much, sacked twice, and hit five times. And Calvin Ridley needs more targets after just one in first half. ... Defensively, the Falcons have to stop surrendering the edge as the Vikings have rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Falcons can't have any more miscues after fumbling once and having a punt blocked.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Falcons inactive vs. Vikings: OT Matt Gono, OL Jamon Brown, WR Olamide Zaccheaus, RB Brian Hill, CB Jordan Miller, RB Qadree Ollison, DT Deadrin Senat. Surprised to see both Ollison and Hill down with maybe the need for a big back in short yardage. Maybe Falcons like what they have in fullback Keith Smith. Also, Brown was competing with James Carpenter for starting left guard spot. Now inactive? Hmmm.

Vaughn McClure ESPN Staff Writer

Asked Arthur Blank about his comfort level with the Falcons' rebuilt offensive line as it prepares to battle a tough Vikings' defense in today's season opener: ``I feel good about where the offensive line is. They're going to have to perform under fire, especially in a division that it built on both sides. They're going to have to step up and do the job.'' Asked if he had any concern about rookie RT Kaleb McGary coming off the heart procedure, Blank said, “No. I have none. I understand the procedure. It's not plumbing, it's wiring. And it may be the last one he has. We knew of his condition when we drafted him. I'm looking forward to him being a heavy contributor this year.'' ... McGary and Ty Sambrailo both expected to play right tackle, according to Dan Quinn. Rookie Chris Lindstrom the new starting right guard; vet James Carpenter the new starting left guard.
