The Saints released three veteran receivers Sunday as they trimmed their roster from 90 to 81 — Tommylee Lewis, Krishawn Hogan and Maurice Harris. That was shaping up to be the most crowded position battle on the team. Now several young receivers should get an even better chance at the fifth or sixth roster spots. The Saints also released G Adrian Magee, FB Ricky Ortiz, RB Taquan Mizzell, CB Deatrick Nichols, S Chris Johnson, DE Gus Cumberlander.

Brees: Reaction to flag comment was 'crushing'

Saints QB Drew Brees said he "missed an opportunity" to bring attention to social injustices and systemic racism when he made his June comment about disrespecting the flag by kneeling.

When asked if six weeks is enough time to get ready for Week 1, Saints DE Cameron Jordan said, “I mean, if you said, 'Cam, could you play this Sunday at midnight?' I guess I'd meet you out in the parking lot somewhere. I'm ready.” Jordan said he assumes everybody took coach Sean Payton's directive to heart earlier this offseason when Payton told the team to show up for camp in the best shape of their lives.

Saints left tackle Terron Armstead didn't hold back when asked for the team's mindset heading into this year following back-to-back 13-3 seasons that fell short in the playoffs. "It's gotta be Super Bowl or bust, in all honesty. That's it. There's not really anything past that. It's Super Bowl or bust," Armstead said. "If we don't get to the big dance, it's a failure of a season. That's it.”

Sean Payton said he thinks the Saints will be close to full strength when they begin practicing. He mentioned LB Kiko Alonso as one player who might be limited after tearing his ACL in January. Payton also said the Saints have no specific plans for separating QBs or certain position groups, other than locker-room distancing. But he said he won't be surprised if the NFL has to suspend some games this year because of outbreaks within position groups that prevent teams from playing.

Sean Payton stressed multiple times “there's nothing about this that is like training camp” and said “This is their schedule, the union's schedule, the management council's schedule. This is not the schedule recommended by our coaches.” But he said teams that adjust best will benefit most. “It's unimportant how anyone feels. What's important is quickly taking what we were given and getting ready to prepare the team.” He promised a lot of running, lifting and the max of padded practices allowed.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis said he believes everyone on the team reported for testing this week aside from the two veteran TEs that have opted out for the 2020 season (Cole Wick and Jason Vander Laan). Loomis said there were no contract holdouts -- though he declined to discuss whether the Saints have had any contract talks with RB Alvin Kamara or any other players. Loomis also said the team has not yet finalized plans for trimming the roster to 80 players or beginning practices.
