The Steelers announced the signing of safety Curtis Riley to a one-year deal. Riley, who started three games for the Raiders in 2019, is a depth signing for the secondary and a veteran presence behind Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds. Riley started every game for the Giants in 2018 and finished with 75 tackles and 4 interceptions -- including a pick-six against Washington.

With the addition of RB Jaylen Samuels and WR James Washington on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Steelers have now placed four total players on the list. The pair, put on the list Sunday, join DB Justin Layne and Arrion Springs from Pittsburgh.

Defensive coordinator Keith Butler expects Devin Bush and Vince Williams to play the bulk of snaps at inside linebacker following the release of Mark Barron, who played 69% of snaps last year. Williams got the nod because "he's a great communicator." Butler said after watching film, he realized most of the defensive breakdowns came in secondary communication. "Sometimes you have to make adjustments, and Vince is real good at doing that for us and getting the calls to the guys."

In a new behind-the-scenes YouTube series, the Steelers highlighted modifications to Heinz Field in order to host training camp this year. The team is using all four locker rooms, giving each player the space of two lockers. One concourse was also converted into a weight room, allowing the team plenty of space to spread out. “Compared to our other training camps,” conditioning coordinator Garrett Giemont said, “it may be even a little bit better because of the amount of space that we have."

Amid flurry of NFL voluntary and high-risk opt-outs this week, I'm told Steelers RB James Conner won't be one of them. The cancer survivor was firm earlier this summer that he would play, and a league source says he's "locked in" for the upcoming season. And it's a big one. The 25-year-old is in the final year of his rookie deal and coming off of an injury-plagued season.

The Steelers have signed former WVU RB Wendell Smallwood for depth heading into training camp. A 2016 fifth-round pick by the Eagles, Smallwood had 850 and three touchdowns in Philadelphia. He spent the 2019 season with Washington where he had 22 carries for 81 yards in 15 appearances.
