Carroll: Taunting enforcement 'a can of worms'

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says the emphasis on enforcing the taunting rule this season was "a good thought" but that it can be hard for players to navigate amid the emotions of a game.

DK Metcalf appeared hobbled late in the Seahawks' overtime loss Sunday, but Pete Carroll said the receiver told him that he's fine. "That's all I know so far," Carroll said Monday, adding that Metcalf wasn't on the injury report that the coach gets from the team's medical staff. Metcalf had six catches on 11 targets for 53 yards vs. Tennessee. He was penalized three times (two were declined). Carroll said Metcalf was trying too hard to set a tone early and "needed to calm down a little bit."

If the Seahawks are going to make a change at corner, Sidney Jones appears to be the likeliest candidate to step in. Pete Carroll told 710 ESPN that he's had enough time to settle in since arriving in an Aug. 30 trade: "Probably was ready a week ago but still wanted to just make sure, so we'll see how it goes." Are they talking with Richard Sherman? "Nothing right now," Carroll said. Sherman and the Seahawks met this offseason to gauge interest in a reunion, but that was before his July arrest.

Pete Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle that the Seahawks were indeed going for it on fourth-and-1 -- not just trying to draw Tennessee offsides -- when Damien Lewis was flagged for a false start. With the Seahawks up seven at their 39 with 4:24 left, Carroll felt a first down would've iced it. He said Jordyn Brooks' unnecessary roughness penalty was so blatant that he had to make a statement by briefly pulling him: "The bench is a great ally for the coach when you have to use it to make the point."

Pete Carroll liked how Russell Wilson played Sunday until the three-and-out in overtime. With Seattle backed at its own 13, he wanted Wilson to check down on first down instead of taking a deep shot to Tyler Lockett. Another incompletion and a sack gave Tennessee a short field for the winning drive. "I wish Russ could've helped us there and just made completions for us," Carroll told 710 ESPN Seattle. "We needed to just move the ball there and change the field position, at least, in overtime."

With Dee Eskridge inactive, Freddie Swain out-snapped Penny Hart 41-3 as Seattle's third receiver against Tennessee. Gerald Everett out-snapped Will Dissly 43-26 after a near-even split between the tight ends in the opener. Here are the Seahawks' offensive snap counts from Week 2:

A healthy scratch in Week 1, L.J. Collier played 20 of 88 defensive snaps Sunday, two more than Alton Robinson. Collier had a QB hit that forced an errant throw. Benson Mayowa and Rasheem Green led their edge players with 57 and 56 snaps, respectively, more than twice as many as Carlos Dunlap's 26. The Seahawks appear to be managing the 32-year-old Dunlap's workload to keep him fresh. Cody Barton played 11 snaps at WLB when Jordyn Brooks was briefly pulled after an unnecessary roughness penalty.

The Seahawks gave Tennessee five first downs via defensive penalties, including four 15-yard flags. They were penalized 10 times in all for 100 yards. "The penalties were just so costly," Pete Carroll said. "So many first downs off penalties when we had them and really had control of the situation and it was really unfortunate that we weren't poised enough. I totally take that on myself." Jamal Adams disagreed with his roughing penalty, calling his hit on Ryan Tannehill a "bang-bang situation."

Tyler Lockett is off to the most prolific start of any receiver in Seahawks history. His 178 receiving yards Sunday gives him 278 this season, easily breaking Steve Largent's franchise record of 215 for most through two games. Lockett had two catches of 50-plus yards Sunday for the first time in his career. One went for 51 yards, the other for 63 yards and his third touchdown of the year. He now has four career games with at least 150 receiving yards, tying Largent's team record.

Bobby Wagner's 20 tackles against Tennessee set a career high and a team record. That included a sack, which was one of his two QB hits. "It's cool," he said of the record. "But we lost, so it doesn't really matter." Wagner, Seattle's defensive captain, projected frustration and perspective after the Seahawks blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead: "It's definitely not a great feeling but it's something that we can earn from. It's early in the season, so we have to watch this film and get better."

The Seahawks sacked Ryan Tannehill three times, matching their total from last week, and had eight QB hits. That included an Alton Robinson strip-sack that set up a short Seattle touchdown. But their pass-rush wasn't as consistent as Pete Carroll expected. "We really thought that we would get more pressure just watching what happened last week," he said, referring to the six sacks Tennessee allowed in its opener. "But they did a nice job and we didn't do as well as we needed to."

Derrick Henry's 182 rushing yards matched the most the Seahawks have allowed in any game under Pete Carroll. They contained him early then allowed 147 of those yards after halftime, 60 coming on his second touchdown. Carroll vaguely said they “were too aggressive on the edge” on that play, which gave Henry a lane between a blitzing Jamal Adams and Tre Flowers, who whiffed on the tackle. So did Quandre Diggs. “All day long we fought to not let that happen and then it finally did,” Carroll said.

Pete Carroll said Brandon Shell suffered a sprained ankle on the Seahawks' final drive of regulation, an injury that forced Jamarco Jones to finish the game at right tackle. He had no update on the severity of the sprain. Carroll was vague on wide receiver DK Metcalf, who looked as though he was playing through something late in the game. "He was a little sore, yeah," Carroll said of Metcalf. "I'm not sure exactly what it was. He banged his knee or something like that."

The Seahawks welcomed their fans back to Lumen Field with an impressive first half. They shook off a sluggish start to take a 24-9 lead with a long touchdown from Russell Wilson to Tyler Lockett and two short rushing scores by Chris Carson, one set up by an Alton Robinson strip sack. The Seahawks have the Titans where they want them -- in a two-score hole that could force them to abandon Derrick Henry in favor of throwing behind an iffy O-line in a loud stadium against a strong pass-rush.

On his 710 ESPN Seattle pregame radio hit, GM John Schneider says the Seahawks are playing it smart by de-activating DT Bryan Mone in the hopes of getting him back next week. He said Mone played through a triceps injury in the opener. Robert Nkemdiche is up off the practice squad in Mone's absence. Schneider likened Nkemdiche, a 2016 first-round pick who was out of football in 2020, to Michael Bennett in how aggressively he shoots gaps and gets up-field: "You're going to see him be disruptive."

The Seahawks' inactives vs. Tennessee: DT Bryan Mone, WR Dee Eskridge, RB Rashaad Penny, QB Jake Luton, CB John Reid, OT Stone Forsythe.

The Seahawks downgraded WR Dee Eskridge (concussion) from doubtful to out for Sunday's game vs. Tennessee. They elevated DT Robert Nkemdiche from their practice squad. That's likely tied to DT Bryan Mone's (elbow) questionable status.

Darrell Taylor said he "can't freakin' wait" to play in front of fans at Lumen Field for the first time. He's confident their return will give Seahawks pass-rushers an advantage as the deafening noise forces O-linemen to watch the ball to know when it's snapped: "You've got a tackle looking down on the ball and I'm about to come off the edge, there ain't no way he's going to stop that. So I think that's going to work out in our favor really well considering how we get after the quarterback."
