In the wake of his signing a record contract extension with the Seahawks, quarterback Russell Wilson said Wednesday that a no-trade clause was paramount to getting a deal done, and he also spoke of wanting to emulate Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

Source: Seahawks make Wilson top-paid in NFL

The Seahawks and Russell Wilson have reached agreement on a four-year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL, a source says.

By agreeing to a record extension with Russell Wilson, the Seahawks and their quarterback avoid the messy and dicey alternative. The unwieldy cap charges that would have come with Wilson playing on franchise tags after 2019 would have made it more difficult than it already will be for Seattle to extend Bobby Wagner and/or Frank Clark. It would have meant no long-term certainty for Wilson. And it may have been the first step towards an eventual divorce between the Seahawks and the player who's most important to their chances of competing for a Super Bowl. Last season's playoff berth showed that you can never count out a team with an elite quarterback. The Seahawks won't have to find out what life is like without one anytime soon.

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have agreed to an extension. Wilson made that announcement himself in a video he posted to Twitter about 45 minutes after the passing of the midnight Tuesday deadline his side had set. "Hey Seattle, we got a deal," Wilson said while lying in bed next to his wife Ciara.

As expected, Russell Wilson was present Monday for the start of the Seahawks' offseason program amid the uncertainty over his contract negotiations. Wilson is pictured in a gallery on the team's website alongside defensive tackle Jarran Reed, whose presence is also noteworthy given that he's entering the final year of his rookie deal and is in line for an extension of his own.

Sources: QB Wilson won't sign after deadline

Russell Wilson will not sign an extension with the Seahawks this season if they don't reach agreement by his midnight Monday deadline, sources told ESPN.

Yates: Wilson deal could still get done (1:16)

The Seahawks will bring in Central Michigan cornerback Sean Bunting on a 30 visit, a source tells ESPN. Bunting's measurables should look familiar: 6 feet tall, 195 pounds and 31 3/4-inch arms. He ran a 4.42 at the combine. Bunting left CMU after his redshirt junior season and picked off nine passes in three years there, which included two as a starter.

The Seahawks have waived kicker Sam Ficken and linebacker Emmanuel Beal, according to ESPN's Field Yates. The Seahawks added Ficken on a futures deal after last season but later gave Jason Myers a four-year contract that includes $7 million guaranteed, meaning he'll be their kicker for the foreseeable future.
