Today is among my favorite days on the hockey calendar: the last day of the exhibition season! Thank goodness. Let's get on with it. The final two exhibition games take place overseas with the Detroit Wings and Florida Panthers skating against Swedish and Finnish League teams, respectively.

All the teams have to finalize their season-opening rosters today. That means getting themselves cap-compliant. Over the past couple of days, teams have been putting numerous players through waivers for the purposes of sending them to the minors -- and, in some cases, ridding themselves of possible salary cap problems. For example, D Randy Jones cleared waivers earlier in the week and the Philadelphia Flyers likely will send him to their AHL affiliate in Adirondack, saving $2.75 million worth of cap space.

To read about why the Flyers might lose Jones and which waiver wire pickup could make a big impact on a young team, you must be an Insider. Insider
