Smart Switch

Hey, Peter Laviolette, this Bud's for you! For the second straight game in the Eastern Conference finals, Laviolette made a goaltending switch work for his team. Now, the Hurricanes find themselves one win from a date with the Oilers in the Stanley Cup finals.

In Sunday's Game 5, the Canes fell behind 3-1 early in the second period. Starting stopper Martin Gerber, who blanked the Sabres on Friday night in his first start since April 24, was beaten to his stick side three times. (Is this a weak spot in Gerber's game?)

After the third goal, scored by Sabres D-man Toni Lydman on a breakaway just 1:55 into the second period, Laviolette felt his team needed a change. So, young Cam Ward -- benched in Game 4 -- grabbed his mask, jumped over the boards and headed for the crease.
