Morning Skate: My three stars

April, 10, 2008
Here are my three stars from the first night of the best playoffs on earth.

3. Gary Roberts, Pittsburgh Penguins
In just his second game of the calendar year, the 41-year-old forward (he turns 42 on May 23) scored a pair of goals -- just one fewer than his regular-season total in 38 games -- to lead the Pens to a dominating 4-0 win over the suddenly sad-sack Senators on Wednesday. I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see Roberts torturing the Senators. He did it so often during his tenure with the Maple Leafs. Roberts now has scored 14 of his 32 career playoff goals against the Senators. That's why Sens owner Eugene Melnyk was so peeved when former GM John Muckler couldn't work a deal to get Roberts from the Panthers at the 2007 trade deadline. There is a silver lining for Melnyk and his team. They probably won't be seeing too much more of Roberts. If they don't pick up their game dramatically, they'll be going home soon ... very soon.
