Going around the coaching carousel

June, 18, 2008
It has been two weeks since the Red Wings raised the Stanley Cup. In that seemingly short time, there have been a number of coaching moves all over the NHL map. Here are my thoughts on some recent headlines.

Leafs hire Ron Wilson
After getting his skating papers in San Jose, Wilson didn't take long to glide into a new job. After mulling the Leafs' offer for a few days, the former Ducks, Caps and Sharks coach decided to bring his whistle to Toronto. I see Wilson as a big upgrade over departed coach Paul Maurice, but Wilson does face an uphill battle with a rebuilding club in Toronto. He'll also have to manage his relationship with the city's hockey crazy media. That said, the Leafs couldn't have done much better. Wilson does have a long-term relationship with Brian Burke, who might, someday, leave his current post in Anaheim for a monster opportunity north of the border.
