On the day after a terrific World Junior Championship final game between the Americans and Canadians, it's a perfect time to tell you that a young kid with ties to both countries stands atop my Calder Trophy watch list at the midseason mark.
Born in Texas, raised in Western Canada, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers has moved to the top of my rookie list. The big 6-foot-9 blue liner has quickly become a go-to guy for Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff. Through 41 games, Myers is averaging a team-high and rookie-best 23:02 minutes per game.
Ruff hasn't been afraid to use Myers in any game situation. The big kid has three goals and 19 assists (22 points) as well as a plus-eight rating. Those are pretty good numbers for a defenseman.
