Using the VUKOTA projection system of Hockey Prospectus, Insider is taking the temperature of key players on every NHL team, continuing with the Calgary Flames. For a detailed explanation of Prospectus' proprietary GVT value metric, read more here.

Note: Because of the lockout, GVT scores for the 2013 season are prorated from 48 to 82 games.

Summer Skate: Calgary Flames

Brian Burke, newly hired president of hockey operations for Calgary, has his work cut out for him. It's hard to find a team with lower expectations this season than the Flames. They were on pace for a lottery finish around the trade deadline, dealt two of their best players for low returns and ended up getting hot at the end of the season to play themselves out of a top-5 draft spot.

Things look even worse for the Flames this season, as they have a pretty weak roster, not much to speak of in terms of prospect depth and a dicey goaltending situation. They could surprise some people, but right now, they don't size up well in this new Pacific Division. It appears likely that 2013-14 will be another rebuilding season, unless a few of their players can shatter expectations.
