Macclesfield returned to the top of the Vanarama National League thanks to Nathan Blissett's late winner against Gateshead.
Mitch Hancox was unlucky not to connect with Tyrone Marsh's cross as he and Blissett carried the early threat, while Marsh had an effort cleared off the line.
Shwan Jalal kept out Danny Johnson's overhead kick at the other end while Jared Hodgkiss went close for the Silkmen just before half-time.
Marsh, Danny Whitaker and Danny Whitehead threatened and the impressive Hancox twice went close in the dying stages before Blissett headed past James Montgomery in the 89th minute to lift Macc three points clear of second-placed Sutton.
