Bud Norris still has plenty of promise

September, 7, 2010
Given the quality of his stuff, the Houston Astros' Bud Norris should be getting better results than he has, and I'm surprised that he hasn't been. Why is that, and what can we expect from him in the future?

The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 5.34 ERA and 1.49 WHIP this season despite a strikeout rate better than a batter per inning (9.2 K/9), which would put him among the top-10 starting pitchers in the major leagues. Control has been an issue; he has walked just less than four batters per nine this season. However, he had made progress this season. Norris' walk, strikeout and homer rates have all improved slightly from his 55-inning debut in 2009, and he's getting more ground balls as well.
