Guarch raises his profile in Spain
At the start of next year, if not sooner, Mexican officials will begin parsing through lists of players to fill up the federation's Olympic squad. One position of particular note will be starting striker, where Mexico has several options.
Should they decide to go the same route as they did at the Pan American Games then perhaps 27-year-old Santos striker Oribe Peralta will be the choice.
If Mexico prefers to give the spot to a younger player, then perhaps Chivas' Erick Torres or Braga's Edson Rivera may get the nod.
But if you're in search of a sleeper, look no further than Espanyol's 20-year-old Taufic Guarch, who is starting to get in form for the team's B squad, which plays in the Spanish fourth division. The forward, who starred at this summer's U-20 World Cup, even outplaying the more highly regarded Torres, scored the first two goals of his European career, both on penalty kicks, the past two weeks after moving into the starting lineup.
