Veteran options if U.S. qualifies

March, 21, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Yes, we understand that the Yanks have not yet earned the right to play in this summer's Olympics. No, we're not trying to jinx Caleb Porter's U.S. under-23 squad on the eve of the regional qualifying tournament for the Games, which begins for the Americans on Friday when they face Cuba at LP Field here in the Music City.

Fact is, we're hardly the only ones talking about which trio of "overage" players -- each team that makes the cut is allowed to bolster its roster by adding three players older than 23 -- Porter will pick if and when the USA punches its ticket to London.

Landon Donovan says he wants to go. So does Clint Dempsey. Carlos Bocanegra, cut from the U.S. team when he was age-eligible back in 2000, is interested, too.
