Blazer: Triennial World Cup could work

December, 16, 2010

ESPN The Magazine's New Year! New Rules! issue hit newsstands this week, and among other things, it contained a list of changes the publication would like to see across sports. Soccer was well represented; the suggested tweaks included using video technology to review disputed goals (a no-brainer, say U.S. players Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra) and eliminating offside within the 18-yard box (OK, perhaps a bit more revolutionary).

But the most controversial suggestion surely was to move the World Cup, the beautiful game's crown jewel, onto a three-year cycle. Clearly, not everyone agreed with our idea.
