Friedel is highest-paid U.S. footballer

April, 21, 2011

Given that this week ESPN The Magazine rolled out its Money issue, where we took our best shot at determining the highest-salaried athlete in almost every country in the world, we figured now would be a good time to ask how well American soccer players do in raking in the cash from their European clubs.

So we asked two trusted sources, U.K.-based Nick Harris of and Ori Cooper of IM Scouting, both of whom provided us with data and insight for The Mag's piece. What did we learn? Well, the most interesting tidbit is that Brad Friedel is the highest-paid U.S. footballer. (Although Oguchi Onyewu, on loan to FC Twente but still under contract with AC Milan, isn't far behind.) Lucky Insider subscribers also get the rest of the story, or at least a good part of it, when it comes to Americans' pay stubs.
