Five most likely transfer candidates

June, 20, 2012

After a grueling, 10-month-long club season that was followed by another four demanding weeks with the national team, the U.S. squad's European-based contingent is enjoying some well-earned vacation time (see if can you spot the current and former Yanks at Game 3 of the NBA Finals) right now.

But for some of Jurgen Klinsmann's most important players, that doesn't mean business is taking a backseat altogether. More top Americans than ever before are expected to switch clubs this summer, perhaps as soon as July 1, when the Silly Season officially gets underway with the opening of UEFA's primary transfer window.

Here are the five U.S. vets most likely to be on the move this summer:

Carlos Bocanegra, D, Rangers (Scotland)

Doug McIntyre is a staff writer for ESPN The Magazine. He has covered American and international soccer since 2002.
Luke Cyphers is a former senior writer for ESPN The Magazine.
