WIMBLEDON, England Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport and No. 14 Venus Williams will meet for the women's singles title at Wimbledon Saturday. This is a rematch of the final in 2000, when Williams won the first of her back-to-back titles. I think Venus will win again, but you can certainly make a case for either. It will be fun to watch.
Both are playing really great tennis, which is exciting especially for Williams. Davenport is playing great tennis; if she wasn't, she wouldn't be No. 1 in the world. But what Williams has done here is outstanding.
She has been criticized about how she has conducted her professional tennis life. It's been said that she is too distracted and unfocused. But look at her here. She has improved with every round. She is moving better than any woman player over 6 feet tall, ever, which brings up one of their main differences. Probably the biggest edge Venus has is in movement. It's probably a two-step advantage, and that's a lot of court. When you play Davenport, you need to be able to cover a lot of court.
