Changes to GaTech's triple option offense

Georgia Tech hired a new quarterbacks coach, Bryan Cook, at the beginning of April. Cook came to Georgia Tech via Cal Poly where he served as the Mustangs' offensive coordinator. Johnson was intrigued by Cook's offense at the time, and it appears the new assistant coach is having a profound effect on how Georgia Tech will run its offense this fall.

"He has done some interesting things at Cal Poly using the shotgun element as well so I feel like he is a good fit for us," Johnson told Kelly Quinlan of JacketsOnline.com at the time of Cook's hire.

Running back Robert Martin (Harrisburg, Penn./Harrisburg) is being recruiting by Georgia Tech, and he said the Yellow Jackets will do more than dabble with the shotgun.

“I know they’re a fast-paced offense and I know they like to get to the ball in a lot of people’s hands," Martin told Brian Dohn of Scout.com. "They’re going to be putting in a lot of shotgun, one-back (sets) and they think I can make a lot of plays for them.”

Cook's offense at Cal Poly developed from a triple option offense like Paul Johnson's into the shotgun variation which finished 13th in total offense at the FCS level last season. Johnson and Cook hope for similar results at Georgia Tech.
