Now that Texas is done recruiting Ricky Seals-Jones, who will take his place in the Longhorns’ recruiting class? One committed prospect might still be on the radar.
ESPN 150 receiver Robbie Rhodes (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest) told HornsNation he received a call from Texas receivers coach Darrell Wyatt on Monday. Their phone conversation was the first they’d had since Rhodes committed to Baylor on June 10.
“He was just telling me about the game they played against Ole Miss and all that and he really just wants me to keep in touch,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes said Wyatt did not bring up Texas’ need for a receiver now that Seals-Jones is no longer an option, and he didn’t ask Rhodes to make an unofficial or official visit.
Instead, Wyatt wanted to catch up and talk about how Rhodes’ senior season is going. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound wideout has 14 catches for 395 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
“He didn’t talk to me about their school, really,” Rhodes said. “He just really talked about my stats and asked me for updates about me and all that stuff. ... This is the first time we’ve talked in a while. He’s sent me a couple of messages on Facebook but I hadn’t really replied back.”
Rhodes said he’s still firm in his commitment to Baylor and speaks with Bears coaches weekly, and he attended their season-opening win over SMU earlier this month.
Texas offered Rhodes a scholarship in May and hosted him on an unofficial visit during the state track meet. The No. 5 ranked receiver prospect gave Baylor his pledge nearly a month later, citing his preference for the Bears’ offensive scheme and an opportunity for immediate playing time.
The Longhorns might still have a chance, though. Rhodes said he currently has no plans to take visits elsewhere, but it’s not too late for Texas to re-enter the picture.
“I want to know for sure. I like Baylor, really,” Rhodes said. “But right now, my mind is still not made up.”
