TORONTO -- New York Islanders captain John Tavares has three more seasons left on his contract, so he can observe the speculation surrounding Anze Kopitar and Steven Stamkos' contract negotiations with a bit of detachment. The results of those deals might affect him more than any player in the NHL, but that impact won’t be immediate. So he’s following the news, at least somewhat.
“A little bit. You see it all,” Tavares said when we chatted on Wednesday during the NHL Player Media Tour in Toronto.
The Stamkos and Kopitar contract negotiations dominated conversations at the tour, with both players addressing the lack of a deal. You walked away with a sense that they are very different situations.
